Vintage Clothes: The Roaring 20s

Two of the big trends for Spring/Summer 2012 are the 20s and the 50s. It seems that designers have taken inspiration from more optimistic eras as an antidote to the tough economic climate. And perhaps even cinema has had an impact on fashion collections, with the hotly anticipated Baz Luhrmann adaptation of The Great Gatsby showing in December. But whatever the reasons behind it, Spring/Summer is all about vintage clothes.

Taking a look at the roaring 20s, the key is in the detail. On the catwalks dresses were dripping with sequins and lavish beading, and decorated with tasselled trims. In the case of this trend, more is most definitely more. It’s all about maximum impact, and the easiest way to nail the 20s trend is to buy vintage clothes. At everywhere from Alberta Ferretti to Gucci, dresses had 20s silhouettes with dropped waists, oozing opulence and glamour. Other designers put a new twist on an old style, such as Roberto Cavalli with his lace panelling and Versus with its use of pastel accents, combining two trends in one.

So by night go for flirty, beaded vintage dresses with dropped waists, but what about daytime glamour? Well flapper dresses weren’t the only 20s silhouettes seen all over the Spring/Summer catwalks. For daytime chic opt for classy vintage clothes in the form of cloche hats and silky separates. Look to Ralph Lauren for inspiration on this one; a trend that will inevitably trickle down to the high street in time for next season.

But overall the vibe was full on, show-stopping 20s glamour in black, white and gold. It remains to be seen whether you will be able to pick up an intricately beaded flapper dress on the high street for this Spring/Summer. But there will be a number of vintage clothes available in boutiques and online, such as on ASOS Marketplace. And as an investment buy they are well worth looking out for, don’t you think?
